How feed can impact the digestive system

How feed can impact the digestive system

Piglet diarrhea can be a significant barrier to achieving, and maintaining, a healthy growth rate in piglets. Learn how specific nutrition can help to overcome these challenges.

Key characteristic of feed

The right type of feed can be an important driver in reducing the risk of post-weaning piglet diarrhea whilst maintaining a healthy growth rate. Pig farmers who want to avoid the use of antibiotics or therapeutic zinc would benefit from gaining more knowledge about specific characteristics of feed that have an impact on gut health.

Neopigg® Shield is a feed concept that consists of components that positively impact on gut integrity. By choosing a feed that aims to stimulate mucus production to create a layer on the intestinal wall, intestinal damage and consequently diarrhea at weaning can be reduced to a minimum. This is a key characteristic of feed which farmers should look for when seeking to reduce the risk of diarrhea whilst avoiding the need to use therapeutic zinc.

Mucin effect in post-weaning piglets

Research indicates that therapeutic zinc has a positive impact on gut integrity. The mucus layer is a gel-like coating in the intestine of the piglet. Mucin profiles are a class of glycoproteins, which are produced in the intestine by special intestinal cells, they form a gel-like layer on the intestinal wall. The mucus layer increases piglet gut health as it acts as the first shield against harmful pathogens. These pathogens would otherwise enter the gut and attach to the intestinal wall often resulting in diarrhea. In addition, it supports the processes of digestion in the intestine. The mucin effect is one of four key modes of action of NeoPigg® Shield that can help reduce the occurrence of piglet diarrhea during the post-weaning stage.

Research on gut health in piglets

During practical trials on commercial farms, Cargill found that farmers could remove therapeutic zinc from diets, when the total Neopigg® Shield concept was applied. In addition, an increase of up to 6% in average daily gain could be attained. With good farm management, certain feed can contribute to reduce the occurrence of diarrhea in piglets whilst maintaining health and growth.

Together with good farm management, Cargill's feed concept can positively impact the occurrence and the incidence of diarrhea in piglets. We have prepared a handy poster which gives you five practical steps which will help to reduce the risk of disease on farm, you can download the poster or print it for in your barn.
